Recent Doings

On June 7th, I will host "I DON'T FEEL TARDY," the third in a series of "lunar pub quizzes"; thusly named because in addition to my weekly trivia nights, I host thematic pub quizzery the first Saturday of every month. The next topic is music - I will challenge your knowledge of all genres of music, from Aida to X. I'll also include "book learnin'" material, such as music theory and history. Showtime is at 7:00 at Peter's 19th Hole. As always, ShanRock's Triviology is free to play, with prizes for the champions!

Congratulations to Sugartits for winning "Kurdistan & Mr. Hand," during which this well-rounded team showed off their knowledge of geography, history, and the like. Themes for upcoming months include "Science Fiction&Fact" and TV.

When & Where?

I compose unique questions for every single pub quiz I host, so play as much as you like without being a cheater!

*Breathe easy at this non-smoking Triviology venue. Every member of the winning team gets a gift certificate.

Hawthorne Hideaway
2221 SE Hawthorne Blvd
Mondays @ 8:00 PM

*Double your chances of winning stuff here, as this is the only Triviology venue which offers prizes to the runners-up, as well as to the winning team. The 1st and 2nd place victors choose from either gift certificates or Pabst Blue Ribbon T-shirts.

Sewickly's Addition
4901 SE Hawthorne Blvd

Peter's 19th Hole
5701 NE Fremont St

*Expect spectacular service from Jackie, whom Triviologists voted Best Bartender of 2007 AND 2008!! Peter's is where it all began - I have been doing trivia nights at this venue for over three years. This is the home of "lunar pub quizzery," and the venue at which you are most likely to get a round of video clips, due to the nice, big, plasma TV they've got.

Oliver's

How can you not want one of those?!? As an added bonus, enjoy the culinary stylings of the legendary Montage while savoring a finely crafted cocktail.

About the Pub Quizzery

Triviology pub quizzes are free to play, last a couple of hours, and are composed of seven short rounds, giving teams instant gratification for their efforts. Team size can range from one - five players. Questions are thoroughly researched and cover a wide variety of topics. Here’s my standard format:

Round I: CHOTCHKIE'S (the "flairy" restaurant in "Office Space")
Miscellaneous trivia, including The Token Sports Question.
ex: What is the best-selling candy bar in the world?

Round II: POTATO POWER
TV and movie trivia, sometimes with video clips.
ex: On “The Dukes of Hazzard,” what kind of car is The General Lee?

Round III: BOOK LEARNIN'
Questions about geography, history, science, literature, etc. . . y'know - book learning!

Round IV: LET'S GET PHYSICAL (Olivia Newton-John song title)
Something active, fun and easy, like Barrel of Monkeys or putting golf balls. I also love to create unique rounds that challenge all of your senses. For example, I've had a smelling round (composed of fresh cut herbs from my garden), and a cheese tasting round. Yes, you read that right - FREE CHEESE!

Round V: WHAMMY! (from the TV show "Press Your Luck")
I pick a different, specific topic each night, and ask you stuff about it. Past rounds have challenged teams' knowledge of Saturday Night Live cast members, US state quarters, Stephen King novels, and Latin phrases, amongst other things.

Round VI: I AM A WALRUS (A. M. Hall quote from "The Breakfast Club")
I provide information about an individual, one piece at a time. The sooner you guess, the more points you could get. Past subjects have included Socrates, Billy Idol, Darwin, Woody Woodpecker – you get the idea.

Round VII: I DON'T FEEL TARDY (from the song "Hot For Teacher")
Identify song title and artist from audio clips; music ranges from hip hop to classical to punk to pop to country.

RETIRED ROUNDS (Mind you, I still use these formats, I just usually scatter them thoughout my trivia nights, rather than composing enitre rounds of them):

NATALIE PORTMANTEAU: Combine film or TV show titles to form a new one.
ex: film adaptation of an Alice Walker novel + movie in which Apollonia cleanses herself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka = "The Color Purple Rain"

YOU COULD BE A CONTENDER (quote from "On the Waterfront"): I play video or audio clips from film or TV; you identify the title and actor.
ex:”I love my dead, gay son!”

WORD UP (title of a song by Cameo): literature, poetry, grammar, theater, comics, etc.
ex: What author asked the question, “Who is John Galt?”

I’M JUST A BILL (from Schoolhouse Rock!): History, geography, current events.
ex: What is the most common first name for a US president?

WHO BRINGS THE HEAVY? (a student asked a teacher friend of mine this question in an effort to understand gravity): All manner of scientific inquiry.
ex: What anatomical feature of gorillas do primatologists use to identify and distinguish individual apes from each other?

Would you like your bar to be her next host?

Oooooo . . . too late! I'm all booked up for weekly gigs. I am available for special events, though. And, just in case something opens up in the future, here’s some of what ShanRock’s Triviology can do for you:

Attract New Customers
ShanRock’s pub quizzery brings in dozens of players at a time, and is usually the reason that the majority of customers are patronizing the bar that night.

Engage Returning Customers
Offer a gift certificate to your bar as a prize. Champions will return to cash it in, and they'll often bring friends.

Enjoy a Captive and Thirsty Audience
Triviologists hang out for at least a couple of hours, during which time there will be lots of fun people in your bar, drinking and spending money.

Fun For You and Your Staff
Bar staff are encouraged to play along. Winning gift certificates to the bar won’t do them much good, but most people are in it for the glory anyway! Your bar may choose to have a "Wall of Fame" of some sort, with the each week's champion team posted thereupon; bragging rights are a big selling point for trivia!

Triviology FAQs

How does the game work?
I ask a series of well-researched questions, which are divided into rounds, staggering pop culture (movie quotes, song clip ID, TV trivia, etc.) with academic inquiry (science, history, literature, etc.). Teams grade each others’ papers as I deliver the answers after each round, giving folks instant gratification for their efforts. The team with the highest score at the end of the pub quiz gets prizes . . . and the envy of their friends and foes!

How many people on a team?
Maximum team size is five. It's just no fair if a 12-headed Hydra trounces a respectable little quintet. A large group can have a great time dividing in two and waging civil war against each other. On rare occasion, a team of one has even been know to win!

Where do your questions come from?
I write all of my own questions, most of my research being done on the internet. I just wouldn't feel comfortable asking questions that somebody else wrote, because I like to know something about what I'm asking . . . and also, because doing the research is half the fun of being a trivia jockey (nerd alert!). Every time I hear an interesting "fact" and try to confirm it, I always discover a dozen more questions to ask, so I'll certainly never run out of fresh material!

How much should I tip the trivia jockey?
I'm glad you asked! First of all, the 15% rule doesn't apply, since 15% of zero is zero. Rather, I'd love it if players tipped a buck each.

How much does it cost to rent a whole trivia jockey?
My asking price is $100 per weekly pub quiz. I am also available for private parties, corportate events, etc. (price negotiable). I have hosted fundraisers for FirstBook and ECO, pub quizzes for Wordstock, PSU, the Pacific Northwest College of Art, and Portland Elvis' birthday party, and have even taken Triviology mobile a couple of times!

What’s so special about THIS trivia night?
Pub quizzes have become all the rage of late, haven't they? Well, when I started this business in 2004, I designed my format specifically to be interactive. Teams aren't playing just to win money, they are playing to have fun! They score each others' papers at the end of each round (often with superfluous nasty notes), they compete against each other in the physical challenge, and they can even "take it to the forum" if they have any unfinished business at the end of the night - Triviology is rife with rivalries! Particularly unique rounds which both regulars and rookies love are the I Don’t Feel Tardy audio clip round (because everyone likes some kind of music), Potato Power with video clips (questions about "Saturday Night Live" scenes, for example), and I Am A Walrus (in which teams get to do a wee bit of gambling). Also, I periodically supplement my already rad trivia nights with unusual activities such as scavenger hunts, taste rounds and live music.

How did this Triviology business get started, anyways?
Back in the early 2000s, I discovered a great trivia night entitled The Keg Quiz at The Horse Brass. It was created and hosted by the man who was to become my trivia sensei, Drew Marcus. My teammates and I, the legendary Team Ireland, were heartsick when Drew "retired" (read: got a real job). Back then, there were only a couple of trivia nights in town, and they just didn't stack up to the good old Keg Quiz. Drew generously offered to give me the intellectual property to his pub quiz so that I could continue the legacy, but I decided I'd be more comfortable creating my own format. And so, I eased the loss of The Keg Quiz by starting some pub quizzery of my own. Thus, Triviology was born, in January 2005 at Peter's 19th Hole.

Who is this ShanRock, and how do I get in touch with her?
I’m an experienced trivia jockey, a Shanghai Tunnel Rat, a champion of local adventure games PDX Assassin and The Golden Keg Race, a writer for Barflymag.com, a former Mad Scientist, and a bachelor of Anthropology and English.

Glossary

Adding Music: Whichever team gets the high score in I Don't Feel Tardy gets to choose one song from that round which I'll play as "adding music" while the final scores for the night are being calculated.

Barfly Back to School Trivia Bus: Miss Jen Lane of Barfly Fame has been hosting super-fun (but super-safe!) boozehound buses for several years now, and I am honored to occasionally host one of her "bus babies," including the annual mobile trivia challenge bus!

Birthday Smackdown Week: My birthday just so happens to fall at the halfway mark to the Clash of the Trivia Titans. To serve as a reminder of this forthcoming championship, and to give players a chance to ask the trivia jockey questions for a change, throughout the last week of August, triviologists get a chance to earn points by stumping me at the end of each pub quiz!

Bonus: Almost every round has at least one bonus opportunity, and usually more. These are generally worth one point each.

Cash: What you win at Sewickly's - my only Triviology venue which offers cash prizes. The bar puts up a buck a brain, so the more friends you bring along to play, the more you could win off of them!

Casio Peia: This honorary award belongs to AlliTron, who on occasion brings in her keyboard to play a live I Don't Feel Tardy round for us.

Cinco de Trivio: This title is bestowed upon any team who wins at any five of my current venues. The only team thus far to have achieved the honor are the mighty Pork Swords! I have yet to come up with a catchy phrase for the future champions of all six of my venues, but I am open to suggestions (when I only had four venues, this honorific was entitled The Quadriga; three venues - The Trifecta).

Cinema Trivioso: An all movie themed pub quiz I held on Saturday, 4/5/08 (title is a variation of the Italian film, "Cinema Paradiso").

Clash of the Trivia Titans: This trivia championship occurs in February of each year. The event loosely marks the anniversary of ShanRock's Triviology. It also marks the beginning and end of each "trivia season."

The Deuce: This is the two-point set of information in the I Am A Walrus round.

The Doppleganger: This feat is accomplished by winning two pub quizzes in the same night. This is only possible on Thursday nights; a team must reign victorious at both Oliver's at 6:00, and La Merde at 9:00. As of yet, only a couple of teams have won this award: And The Oscar Goes To Kevin Costner & Willocalypse.

Dum-Dums: Candy you get when you answer an I Am A Walrus incorrectly. They soothe the agony of defeat.

Lunar Pub Quiz: The first Saturday of each month, I host a supplemental trivia night with a particular theme (movies, science fiction&fact, music, etc.). As with any ShanRock's Triviology, there will always be a balance of pop culture and book learnin', as well as prizes for the champions. The Lunar Pub Quizzery is held at Peter's 19th Hole at 7:00.

Nerds: Candy I give out whimsically throughout the night. Here are a few actions which have warranted free Nerds: doing the Humpty Dance, doing a Peter Lorre impression, humming the "The More You Know" theme, and juggling.

Onesie: This is the one-point set of information in the I Am A Walrus round.

Pub Quiz: The same exact thing as a trivia night. To say there's a difference is like saying that a film is different from a movie . . . what matters is the quality of the particular movie you're seeing, regardless of whether it is called a film or a movie.

Shenanigans: A team may call "Shenanigans!" if they catch someone cheating. Mind you, this is very rare - in over three years, I've only busted three teams doing so. It's always fun to mock those who actually cheat at TRIVIA. Herein is one such story.

The Slammer: This is a retired venue. I did my pub quizzery there for over a year, but have moved on. Mind you, The Slammer is a great place for hanging out, it just wasn't ideal for Triviology. I recommend playing Dare Jenga while you're there.

Smarties: Candy you get when you answer an I Am A Walrus correctly. They accentuate the thrill of victory.

Switcheroo: Teams switch answer sheets with each other at the end of each round; when I call "Switcheroo!," it is time to write down your final answer and hand it over!

T-shirts: Hundreds of these coveted badges of honor have been won by triviologists over the years, ranging from a variety of Pabst gear to the limited editition handmade "I Heart Trivia" shirts that the Peter's staff made at the dawn of my pub quizzery. But the T-shirts which triviologists most strongly yearn for are those which boast of their trivia prowess, as the custom made articles produced by Albina Green and La Merde.

Three-fer: This is the three-point set of information in the I Am A Walrus round.

Trivette's (pronounced as Tourette's): The act of exclaiming an answer audibly enough for opposing teams to hear; usually occurs due to uncontrollable enthusiasm for the subject matter.

Trivia Night: The same exact thing as a pub quiz. To say there's a difference is like saying that a film is different from a movie . . . what matters is the quality of the particular movie you're seeing, regardless of whether it is called a film or a movie.

Triviology: My friend Dave came up with this title to describe my pub quizzery. His band is good, so you should go see them.

Video Clips: Usually in the Potato Power round, I will play video clips of commercials, music videos, or scenes from film and TV. Due to the lack of TVs at other venues, only Peter's 19th Hole and Oliver's patrons can experience this round.

Whisper Paper: Scratch paper which I supply. The first team I heard call it "whisper paper" was Willocalypse, because one of their members has trouble controlling his excitement when he knows the answers . . . which is frequently. Now, he speaks with his pen.
